This is a female Brown-headed Cowbird, one of the smaller members of the Blackbird Family. This is the first time I’ve seen one on my property that I’ve noticed. I’ve encountered plenty of female Red-winged Blackbirds, especially lately. Apparently Blackbirds of various species often hang out together in flocks. The Cowbird in the photo is at a feeder on my porch railing.

Below are 3 photos of her just after landing, looking around before she ambles over to the feeder. She almost looks like a chick in the first one.

Here she is checking out the feeder before taking her first nibble. Although she’s small compared to others in the Blackbird Family, she is bigger than most of the birds that come to this feeder, therefore it was easy for her to get the thing all to herself.

“Hmm,” she wonders, “Is there anything good in here?”

Ah, she’s not shy anymore, she jumps right in and starts chowing down.

Cowbirds habitat this area year-round, so I will be keeping my eye out for more of them throughout the year.
